This past Saturday, just ahead of World Bicycle Day (03 June 2025), my family and I joined a wonderful city cycling event organized by “Ulice za bicikliste” with the support of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and United Nations in Serbia.
The ride, under the fitting name “There’s Safety in Numbers”, started at Nikola Pašić Square and gathered hundreds of fellow cyclists from across Belgrade. We started our ride in New Belgrade, covering about 6 kilometers before reaching the official meeting point. Even though we followed the marked bike paths, the journey was far from easy especially with kids. Despite being on designated routes, we had to navigate numerous risky situations, from aggressive cars to unclear intersections. As a parent, I was constantly on alert, making sure my six and ten-years-old stayed safe. The lack of awareness that cyclists are even part of traffic was evident and troubling. But once we joined the large group at the square, a new kind of energy took over. Together, we cycled through the city: down Kneza Miloša Street, across the Sava Bridge, all the way to Ada Bridge and Ušće Park. My son even managed to pedal up the Ada Bridge without a break (a moment we celebrated with well-deserved ice cream! ) Why We Ride?Participating in this event was more than a family outing.
It was a clear statement: cycling in Belgrade must become safer, more accessible, and
respected. Today, Belgrade has less than 100 kilometers of bike lanes and fewer than 1% of daily commuters use a bicycle. These numbers paint a sobering picture. But they also motivate initiatives like Movita Ride, which I’m proud to be developing through this platform. Movita Ride is not just an app idea. It’s a movement, a call for community-driven urban change. Our goal is to raise awareness, collect
real-time data about safety risks on the road and support policies that prioritize active, sustainable mobility. This ride reminded me how vibrant and united our cycling community is and how much work lies ahead.
We need better infrastructure, drivers who respect cyclists and institutions that recognize the value of bicycles for cleaner, healthier cities.Let’s keep moving, organizing, speaking up, and showing up — on
two wheels and with purpose.
Because safer streets don’t just happen. We build them together.
